In Your Shadow
In Your Shadow

Thabi grew up with a broken father, who has always been silent about his past. Only when he drinks, he releases incoherent fragments of what happened during his thirteen years as an ANC guerrilla soldier in exile. Out of fear of triggering him, Thabi learned not to ask questions. Remaining silent with him wasn’t a matter of choice, but a matter of survival.

However, when Thabi becomes a mother, she feels the strong need to reconnect with her father. There are too many unanswered questions, also about her own first fewyears growing up in exile in Angola. She realises that she needs to break the silence, that has protected her father for so long, but at the same time drifted them apart.

Thabi takes her father on a trip through Southern Africa in an attempt to retrace his footsteps into exile and gain insight into his transformation from an activist teenager into an armed anti-apartheid fighter and finally to the traumatised veteran he istoday.

On their trip they’ll encounter places and people from her father’s past. This will slowly break the lifelong silence between father and daughter and confront them with an ingrained pattern of avoidance and alcohol abuse.

But the silence turns out not to be limited to her father’s trauma. The encounters witha generation of lonely ex-freedom fighterson the margins of society, make clear that trauma isn’t the only cause of their silence. The ANC, South Africa’s current ruling party, maintains an iron grip on its veterans, a forced silence for the comrades’ mutual protection. They may want to talk, but they can’t.

This leaves Thabi with great doubts about her endeavour. How far can and will she goto find the truth, if that means exposing thedark side of the freedom movement? Will it really bring her father and her closer to each other? Or will it put their fragile bond at risk? Their journey confronts father and daughter with an evil dilemma: staying true to the freedom movement or true to each other.

IN YOUR SHADOW is an intimate investigation into the mechanism of silence andan ultimate attempt to find reconciliation.
