Sociology
Sociology

The Dutch government is calling on schools to pay more attention to teaching 'better citizenship'. But how do you do that?

This is a documentary about sociology teacher Daan's first six months of teaching. Through trial and error, he learns how far removed theory is from day-to-day lived experience. After finishing his degree in sociology in August 2015, Daan starts his career as a high school teacher who produces thinking citizens that feel responsible for their community. But the further into the semester, the more he is confronted with reality.

Will Daan succeed in finding his own way of teaching and will his students get the message?

Early May, the film will go on tour to high schools across the whole country. Teachers, headmasters and students will debate about questions as: what is citizenship education? And how should this be educated at school?

The results of this tour have been bundled in the final debate at ‘De Balie’ in Amsterdam on Wednesday June 15th at 8pm. During this ‘grand final’ the school’s deputies entered into dialogue with policymakers. Missed it? The livestream can be watched here.

The debate tour is made possible by the CoBO Fund, SLO and De Balie.
