Impact campaign My Father, Nour & I
Impact campaign My Father, Nour & I

In the documentary, Wiam breaks the silence concerning his refugee background. With his family he starts the conversation about their experiences. It has been very helpful to him; he feels that the heaviness he feels from these experiences will be less transferable to his children. Wiam wants to share his expierrence with others. That is why the film is going on tour. After watching the film, we will discuss themes and listen to each other stories. To what extent are you the story of your parents? Are you your experiences? Can our sons and daughters heal our wounds? To answer these questions with each other, space is slowly created.

To start, we did pilot-screenings in Utrecht. The reactions are very revealing and touching: "I live already for twenty years in The Netherlands and I'm in therapy for the last two years, but tonight I realise that the heaviness that I feel, is coming from my refugee background" and "This is the most beautiful night since my arrival in the Netherlands" are just one of the responses.

Because of this success we decided to continue in the rest of the country in autumn. Now we organise screenings together with partners all over The Netherlands. But, for everyone who wants to do something with the film, please contact us! We hope that this documentary can help as many people as possible to have this conversation.

Workshop moderating

Part of the impact tour is that we want to train people who experienced the same as Wiam, to also moderate an evening like this. Because how do you do that, give space to such personal stories? This workshop is given by Sahar Shirzad. This resulted in the training of ten moderators who can now be deployed during the screenings that are organised.

A film for all of us

After the first screenings, we now know that there are many people who would like to organize their own screening for people with a similar background to Wiam. We only applaud that. We would prefer it to be a film from 'all of us'. However, an evening like this requires the right guidance; the topics discussed are heavy and extremely personal. That is why we would like to share our experiences with anyone who wants to get started with the film.

Portrait series

We spoke to several people from the 'in-between generation': people who fled to the Netherlands as kids and have now settled here and have children themselves. Curious about their stories?
You can find Lou Repetur's story here and you can read the interview with Mohamoud Hersi here. The interview with Leila Prnjavorac will also follow soon. Keep an eye on the website!

With support from the V-Fonds, Fonds21, Gemeente Utrecht, KF Hein en The Fred Foundation.
