Anne Frank was not the first or only one to become famous for writing a diary in times of war. Years earlier, the diary of Dirk van der Heide (12) from Rotterdam became a bestseller in America. In his diary, which was published as “My sister and I”, Dirk describes his miserable flight from Rotterdam via England to America. To this day, Dirk has never been seen again. Many people were captivated by their disappearance for decades. How could this boy just disappear? Did he actually exist? In search of this, we find not one but many boys who fled their country.
